The marking on profiled sheet encodes everything you need to choose: purpose, rib height and sometimes sheet width. PS-20 is a wall sheet with a 20 mm profile.
The letters in the marking
| Marking | Purpose | Rib height | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS / S | Wall | 8–21 mm | Fences, wall cladding |
| PK / NS | Roofing, load-bearing | 20–44 mm | Roofs, decking |
| N | Load-bearing | 57–114 mm | Industrial roofs, formwork |
Common grades
| Grade | Overall width | Effective width | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS-8 | 1200 mm | 1150 mm | 0.40–0.50 mm |
| PS-20 | 1150 mm | 1100 mm | 0.40–0.55 mm |
| PK-35 | 1060 mm | 1000 mm | 0.45–0.70 mm |
| NS-44 | 1070 mm | 1000 mm | 0.50–0.80 mm |
Effective width is the number that matters
Always count by effective width, not overall width: adjacent sheets overlap by one rib. The gap between 1150 and 1100 mm looks trivial, but across a 40-metre fence it is two extra sheets.
Number of sheets = run length ÷ effective width, rounded up.
Example for a 40 m fence in PS-20: 40,000 mm ÷ 1100 mm = 36.4 → 37 sheets.
Calculating for a roof
For a pitched roof the sheet runs the full length of the slope plus 40–50 mm of overhang. If the slope exceeds 6 metres the run is made from two sheets with a 200 mm end lap, which must be added to the calculation.
Rows across the width are counted the same way, by effective width. Add 5% to the result for trimming at the gables and around the chimney.
0.40 mm is fine for a fence; for a roof start at 0.45 mm. The price difference is small but the stiffness difference is not: a thin sheet flexes underfoot during installation and can buckle under snow.
