Chain-link mesh for fences and enclosures

Chain-link is woven wire mesh with diamond-shaped openings. It is the cheapest way to fence a plot: it lets light through, does not catch the wind and needs no continuous foundation. It is used on plot boundaries, around gardens and orchards, in animal enclosures, as temporary site fencing, and as a reinforcing layer in render and screed.

Two parameters decide everything: mesh size and wire thickness. A smaller opening contains smaller animals; thicker wire carries more load and lasts longer. Galvanised wire survives outdoors for years, while black wire is cheaper but needs painting. The mesh is stretched between posts along a tension wire, otherwise it sags over time.

Questions and answers

Chain-link questions

Which mesh suits a plot fence?

A standard boundary fence usually takes a medium opening and galvanised wire: it keeps its shape and needs no repainting each season.

Galvanised or black?

Galvanised costs more but lasts far longer outdoors. Black is chosen for temporary fencing or when it is painted straight away.

What post spacing?

Posts are set so the mesh does not sag between them; the exact spacing depends on mesh height and wire thickness. We will suggest a typical solution.

Is a tension wire needed?

Yes. Without it the mesh sags under its own weight within a season. The wire runs along the top and bottom between posts.
