Steel plate: thickness, formats and weight

What a 1250×2500 and a 1500×6000 sheet weighs by thickness. Hot-rolled versus cold-rolled, galvanised and chequer plate.

Sheet weight is simple: area × thickness × steel density of 7.85 g/cm³. Below are ready figures for the two most common formats.

Hot-rolled or cold-rolled

Hot-rolled — rolled at high temperature. The surface is dark and scaled, tolerances are wider, and it costs less. This is the standard plate for steelwork, gussets and shims — anywhere the surface is not on show.

Cold-rolled — finished cold. The surface is smooth and bright, tolerances are tighter and thicknesses mostly stay under 3 mm. Chosen for painting, bending and visible parts.

Galvanised sheet is cold-rolled steel with a zinc coating: for roofing, gutters, ductwork — anything outdoors.

Chequer plate

Plate with raised lentil or diamond patterns. It goes where people walk: stairs, platforms, workshop floors, ramps. Chequer plate weighs about 5–8% more than plain plate of the same thickness because of the pattern itself.

We cut to your size at the yard. That beats hauling a whole 1500×6000 sheet when you only need two strips: a format like that already calls for a truck, and the offcuts still have to go somewhere.

You can work out weight and cost for your volume right here — or leave a request and a manager will quote it with a batch discount.
