Where reinforcing mesh works
Mesh is laid into horizontal masonry joints to tie the wall together and spread load. In aerated and ceramic block it goes in every few courses: block is strong in compression but weak in tension, and the mesh restrains cracks from shrinkage and uneven settlement. In brickwork it is often placed where load concentrates — under lintels, in piers and in the lower courses.
The second use is screeds. Mesh inside a screed does not turn it into a structural slab, but it holds cracks closed and stops sections drifting apart. What matters is not the thickest possible mesh but its position: it must sit within the mortar, not on the base beneath it.
The choice comes down to three parameters: wire diameter, mesh size and supply format — sheets or rolls. Sheets suit large flat areas; rolls suit cutting to fit and narrow joints.

How does it differ from chain-link?
Chain-link is woven mesh for fencing and temporary works. Reinforcing mesh is welded with a regular grid and works inside a joint or a screed.
How often should mesh go into blockwork?
Usually every few courses, and always where load concentrates. The exact spacing comes from the design or the block manufacturer.
Which mesh suits a screed?
One that sits within the mortar rather than floating to the surface. Position through the screed depth matters more than maximum diameter.
