The block is large but light, so laying is fast and the load on the foundation is lower than with brick. Walls are laid on thin-bed adhesive: a thick mortar joint eats the very thermal performance the block was chosen for.
Block thickness depends on the wall. Load-bearing house walls use thick blocks, partitions use thin ones. The key number for ordering is not the piece count but the volume: aerated concrete is sold and counted in cubic metres, and a pallet holds a set volume. So first calculate wall area minus openings, then convert to cubic metres by thickness.

Load-bearing walls use thick blocks, partitions thin ones. The exact thickness comes from the design, allowing for insulation and load.
What are they laid on?
Thin-bed adhesive. A thick cement-mortar joint becomes a cold bridge and removes the insulation value the block was chosen for.
Is a ring beam needed?
Yes, a reinforced ring beam goes under the floor slab and the wall plate to spread the load. The rebar for it can go in the same order.
