An I-beam has two flanges and a web in the middle. The steel sits exactly where bending demands it, so at the same weight a beam carries more than any other section. Beams are used in floors between storeys, as purlins in garages and sheds, to reinforce openings in load-bearing walls, and in monorails and gantries.
In the marking 20B1 the number is the profile height in centimetres and the letter is the series. B is the normal beam with parallel flanges, the most common in construction. Sh is wide-flange and stiffer sideways, K is the column series. For the same span the series changes both weight and price, so the profile is chosen by calculation.

The number is the profile height in centimetres, that is 200 mm. B is the parallel-flange series and the following digit is the variant within it.
B is the normal beam used in floors. Sh is wide-flange and stiffer across. K is the column series, designed mainly for compression.
