Channel for lintels, purlins and frames
A channel is a U-shaped profile: two flanges and a web between them. It works well in bending along the web, so it is used for lintels over openings, purlins under floors, stair stringers, equipment frames and embedded parts. The profile number is its height in centimetres: 12P means 120 mm between the outer faces of the flanges.
The letter in the marking describes the flange. In the P series the flanges are parallel, which makes joints and bolted connections easier because the bearing face is flat. For the same lintel two adjacent numbers give noticeably different capacity, so the profile is chosen by span and load, not by eye.

What does the number mean?
It is the profile height in centimetres. A 14P channel is 140 mm between the outer flange faces.
How much does a metre weigh?
Weight per metre grows with the number. A full table from 5P to 20P is in our reference section.
Which channel suits a lintel?
It depends on the opening width and the load above. Typical house lintels often use 12P to 16P, but the choice is made by the structural designer.
Channel or I-beam?
A channel has its web on one side; an I-beam has it between two flanges. The beam is stiffer at the same depth, the channel is easier where the profile sits against a wall or is paired back to back.
