Steel channel: sizes and weight per metre

Channel chart 5P–20P: height, flange width, wall thickness, weight per metre. The difference between P and U profiles, and metres of channel per tonne.

A channel is marked by a number — its web height in centimetres. Channel 10 is 100 mm tall, channel 16 is 160 mm. The letter after the number describes the flange shape.

P or U — what is the difference

P — parallel flange faces. The flange is the same thickness across its width, another profile sits flush against it, and welding or bolting is simpler. This is the most common type in Ukraine.

U — tapered inner faces. The flange is thicker at the web and thinner toward the edge. The profile is slightly stronger in bending for the same weight, but connections are trickier.

If the drawing just says “channel 12” with no letter, take P: it is the common one and almost always in stock.

Where each size is used

  • 5P–8P — light frames, opening surrounds, gate frames.
  • 10P–14P — lintels, short-span beams, canopy frames.
  • 16P–20P — load-bearing beams, floor reinforcement, industrial structures.

Standard channel length is 11.7 or 12 metres. We cut to size at the yard: hauling a 12-metre beam on light transport makes no sense, and cutting on site costs time and money.
